The amazing touch screen feature of iPhones was first exhibited by Steve Jobs in his 2007 introduction of the Apple iPhone. It did not need a stylus. It responded to the touch of a finger. It detected multiple touch points simultaneously. One can zoom out and zoom in using the touch of a finger and the thumb together. This iPhone responded to the touch as well as the movement instantaneously

The touch screen phenomenon was not a new revelation. But, earlier, the system worked with a single touch command. It got confused if one touches the screen at several places with a pointed stylus.
Most of the electronic devices use circuitry and sensors to check a change in the state. It may be a change in the electric current. The capacitive material used to make the screen, changes the amount of charge it holds when the screen is touched. If the screen is of the resistive type, then a slight pressure may cause a change in resistance. Some screens respond to the light and sound waves. In this case the finger stops some of the waves hitting the screen.

If one touches or presses the screen at several points simultaneously, the result is erratic, or else, the screen will respond only to the first touch. There are several reasons for such confused behavior. Several systems perceive changes in a specific direction or only along one axis. Some screen trust on averages. Some other uses the principle of baseline identification.
The iPhone touch screen uses a layer of capacitive material, but with a difference. The capacitors are arranged in specific coordinates. Every point on the grid has its unique signal. The iPhone processes each single touch according to its merit. This enables it to resolve every movement and touch with a finger.
The touch screen sends signals to the processor in the form of electrical impulses. The processor determines the shape, size and place of the finger touch. It even calculates the difference between the starting and end point of the touch. The processor relays all the gestures of the finger. It takes only a nanosecond to convert intentions into reality on the screen.
